Trattoria Il Contadino

An old favourite between the river and the station.

Little has changed for decades here, including the price. The décor has been brightened up, but the quality of the food remains exceptionally high and the price has stayed down. Only a few paces from the busier shopping street of Borgognissanti, the regular clientele provides local colour in this trattoria, with a happy buzz of conversation as they discuss the events of the day over a generous bowl of pasta.

The constantly updated, fixed price menu is recited rather than written (with some translations into English if required) but don't worry if you haven't understood everything, it would be hard to go wrong with this home cooking. Main courses are simple meat or fish dishes with a side dish. The house wine brought to you in a carafe is more than acceptable. This quality and price combination tends to cause a queue at busy times so you are expected to free your table as soon as you have finished, if you want to linger a while, arrive after the rush. Desserts and coffee are extra, but will not break the bank.
